Room Assignments
Summer room assignments will be mailed out by Friday, June 6th for all students who had completed the necessary forms. If you did not receive an assignment, you need to complete and fax (828-227-7304) the following Residence Hall Agreements for both the summer and fall:
2008 Summer Residence Hall Agreement
2008-2009 Residence Hall Agreement
We will continue to pre-assign rooms until June 16th and will be contacting those students with roommate information as assignments are made. All others will be assigned on a walk-in basis at check in on Saturday, June 21st. Once your agreements have been processed and you have paid your deposit, you will be able to log in and complete your room and roommate selection process for the fall.
[Note: If you are requesting a specific person to room with for the summer, please make a note of this directly on your summer residence hall agreement.]

Clarification about Tuition & Housing Deposits
ASP students only need to submit one total deposit of $300 for tuition and housing. This covers summer and fall enrollment and will be credited towards the student’s summer bill.
Additional Costs
ASP students will not be required to purchase an AcademiKit Study Organizer from the WCU Bookstore as stated in the ASP participation agreement.
Textbooks are provided through WCU's textbook rental program which is covered by tuition and fees; however, there may be supplemental textbooks or other materials required that are not included. This additional cost does not usually exceed $50.00. In addition, ASP offers activities on weekends and evenings that may involve being away from campus. Although the costs of the trips are included, students may need spending money when attending functions off campus.
Student Health Insurance - Optional for Summer
Students are required to have valid health insurance coverage for the regular school year (fall & spring); however, it is optional during the summer. Student insurance is available during the summer at an additional cost of $181.00. If you do not want health insurance for the summer, you do not have to waive it or pay for it. However, if you are currently insured on your own or a parent(s)' policy and do not want the school's policy, then you will need to waive this requirement for the regular school year by submitting proof of existing coverage. To do so, visit http://www.studentinsurance.com/ and follow the instructions to submit the waiver online.
Class Schedules
Students will receive their summer and fall schedules during Orientation on Sunday, June 22nd. They will also meet with their advisor during Orientation and will be able to make changes to their schedules, if needed. All ASP students will be taking placements tests on Saturday, June 21st.
Course Placement and Testing
ASP students will be placed into their summer courses based on their SAT or ACT test scores. Students who score below a 480 Verbal SAT or below 21 composite ACT are required to take EDRD 150: College Reading. This is a regular, 3-hour credit college course that will focus on building the students' skills in the areas of reading and writing.
Additionally, we are partnering with Southwestern Community College (SCC) to offer The Accuplacer College Placement Test (CPT). This test was developed by the College Board to provide academic readiness information. This computerized Placement Test adapts to your skill level and automatically determines which questions are asked based upon your answers to previous questions. The Accuplacer is not a timed test.
The purpose of the Accuplacer is to allow us to measure how effective our program is in building all ASP students' skills in the core areas of reading and writing. Tests will be given on Saturday, June 21st. The tests will be given again on Thursday, July 31st to allow us to assess the students' improvement in these areas.
Descriptions of the Test:
- Reading Comprehension-This test measures your ability to understand what you read. Some questions will ask you to read the statement or passage and then choose the best answer to the question. Answer the question on the basis of what is stated or implied in the passage. The test contains 20 questions.
- Sentence Skills- This test measures your understanding of how sentences are put together and what makes a sentence clear and complete. This test contains 20 questions.
Information about Parking Permits
ASP students will be able to purchase parking permits for the summer term at a cost of $7.00. Students who plan to bring a vehicle this summer should complete a vehicle registration form (included in ASP mailing - Friday, June 6th) and bring it with them. Students will be able to pick up parking permits during Orientation from 2:00 – 5:00 pm on Sunday afternoon June 22nd in 136 Killian Annex. Students must also have their vehicle registration card and proof of insurance with them in order to obtain a permit. Parking permits will also be available in the Traffic Services office during regular business hours.
Students need to register separately for their fall parking permit and must indicate freshman status on their registration form. Students will receive their fall permit in their student mailbox at the beginning of the fall semester. Students should register a vehicle for the fall online at https://itapp.wcu.edu/VehicleRegistration prior to the beginning of the fall semester.
Financial Aid Information
Students in ASP are eligible to apply for federal financial aid to cover the cost of the summer session. This does not impact the students eligibility for the regular academic year. Students wishing to apply for federal aid should complete the following:
2007-2008 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) [NOTE: Make sure you choose the correct year - 2007-2008. This version of the FAFSA is different than the one that will be used for the Fall 2008/Spring 2009 academic year.]
2007-2008 Personal Data Application
2008-2009 Personal Data Application
Summer School Supplement [NOTE: Make sure you write "ASP - 7 hrs." above the 10 week space]
2008-2009 version of the FAFSA [NOTE: Again, make sure you choose the correct year - 2008-2009. This version is the one to fill out to receive federal financial aid during the regular Fall 2008/Spring 2009 academic year.]
Questions about financial aid should be addressed to the Western Carolina University Financial Aid Office at (828) 227-7290 or finaid@email.wcu.edu.
