Jobs at BCC
Are you a student at WCU? Want to work in the outdoors? Want to get paid to go rock climbing, kayaking, caving, etc? Well here is your chance! Come work for Base Camp. Under the leadership and training of Josh Whitmore and Jennifer Wright, all programs at Base Camp are student run. First and foremost, this is a people oriented job and the majority of your time will be spent giving specific instruction to participants and helping people with information. Be prepared to work hard and have an extra responsible attitude (our participants' safety relies on it). If you like working with people, teaching, and being in the outdoors, this job is for you.

Work During the Summer

We are currently accepting applications for Summer 2008. We're looking for highly motivated employees that are ready to join a high quality program and take pride in a job well done!

During the summer months, BCC is very busy providing outdoor programs for the many groups here on campus. We work primarily with high-school age groups here for various summer camp programs, but also work with incoming college students, and older adults here for conferences. Many summer employees also take summer classes during the regular summer sessions. If you can, enrole in classes that take place before noon.

As a summer employee, you will be trained in whitewater raft guiding. Every employee will spend aprox. half your work time guiding rafts on the Nantahala River and the Tuckaseigee River. You will also be trained in leading at least one other activity such as rock climbing, caving, canoeing, indoor climbing spire, or whitewater kayaking. The other half of your work time will be primarily in this second activity.

Summer staff training starts just after May mini-semester on May 28th and will continue through the first week of June. Summer employment continues till the beginning of August.

Work During the Academic Year

All academic year postitions at BCC are currently full. Summer 2008 positons are open - see above. Summer employees have first choice to work here during the rest of the year.

There are essentially two job functions at Base Camp:

  1. All Employees spend time working at the Base Camp store front on campus. In this capacity, you will help people with gear rentals, local information, and signing them up for trips. You will also help with gear cleaning, repair, and inventory.
  2. Employees also have the opportunity to work the various trips that Base Camp offers. You will plan and design the trip, advertise and market the trip, run and instruct the trip, and complete paperwork and clean up after the trip. Some trips are as short as a few hours, some are as long as 10 days.
