  What do graduate studies in physical education provide?

A comprehensive background in the field, as well as practical experience necessary to:

* Obtain advanced licensure in physical education (K-12) 
* Pursue advanced degrees in pedagogy, motor behavior, or exercise science
* Teach physical education or exercise science in higher education
* Obtain a coaching position at a college or university
* Complete American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) examinations

PE Graduate Program
Our master's programs help students prepare for teaching physical education in public schools, college-level instruction, entry into doctoral programs, or success in a variety of related careers.

Degree Program Offerings
We offer you three master's programs as outlined below.

  • M.A.Ed. – Comprehensive Education:This program is for those who have an initial North Carolina teaching license in Physical Education (K-12) and want to earn an advanced North Carolina teaching license in Physical Education (K-12).
  • M.A.T. – Master of Arts in Teaching: This program is for those who do not have a North Carolina teaching license in Physical Education (K-12) but want to earn an advanced North Carolina license in Physical Education (K-12).
  • M.A.Ed. – Community College Teaching: This is a FLEXIBLE, non-licensure program for those wanting to teach at a community college, become a collegiate coach, or enter a doctoral program.

Graduate Assistantships
Graduate teaching and research assistantships are available on a competitive basis. Assistantships carry a nine-month stipend and are renewable for the second year. For additional information on graduate assistantships, contact Dr. Justin Menickelli.

Endowed Scholarship
The Otto H. Spilker Endowed Scholarship has been fully endowed and allows us to award a scholarship of approximately $500 annually to an outstanding graduate student in physical education. The scholarship recipient is selected in the spring of each year and is awarded to the student in the fall of the following academic year.
