Students must complete four courses in the substance abuse studies certificate program, along with an 18-hour workshop. The workshop includes six hours on ethics and 12 hours on HIV/AIDS and other communicable diseases. The courses and additional workshop constitute the 180 hours of substance abuse specific education mandated by the Board, and together cover all of the competencies needed for licensure in substance abuse practice. Students must also be under the direct supervision of a NCSAPPB approved supervisor (CCS/CSI).
Who Should Apply to the Program?
About the Courses
Four 15-week courses and the workshop are required to meet the coursework standards of NCSAPPB. These courses are approved by the NC Substance Abuse Professional Practice Board (NCSAPPB). The workshop and courses are described below.
Workshop - HIV/AIDS and other Communicable Diseases and Ethics
The workshop will be offered April 3-4, 2009 (Friday-Saturday). Friday will consist of two three-hour sessions on ethics and substance abuse practice. Saturday will consist of two three-hour sessions on HIV/AIDS and other communicable diseases. (An additional six hours will be available via an online format.) The charge for the entire 18-hour workshop will be $250.00 or participants may sign up for individual 3-hour workshops for $50. The workshop is open to all based on available space. The four courses described below are designed to meet the NCSAPPB requirements for substance abuse practice licensure. The courses are taught one afternoon/evening a week over a 10-15 week schedule at either the Enka or Cullowhee campus on a rotating basis. Students are expected to first complete SOCW 420/520, Addictions, before taking the other three courses. For students who are not currently enrolled at WCU, the fee for each course is $425. (NO COLLEGE CREDIT GIVEN). Practitioners who have been accepted to the program may REGISTER FOR THE COURSE.
Addictions (This course is a prerequisite for all other courses.)
Overview of complex issues related to addictions, including drug, alcohol, gambling, and eating addictions; examines addiction within the context of developmental life stages and culture. This course will be taught on Monday evenings in the fall semester (2008) from 6:00-8:50 and begins Jan. 12, 2009 on the Cullowhee campus. Cultural Competence in Substance Abuse Treatment
Overview of unique problems and needs related to substance abuse treatment among diverse populations; application of culturally sensitive intervention strategies. This class will be taught again during the summer term in 2009. Practitioners who have been accepted to the program may REGISTER FOR THE COURSE.
Science of Addiction
The course explores the biological basis of addiction; physiological and psychological effects of substance abuse. The course will be taught on Wednesday evenings in the spring semester (2009) from 6:00-8:50 and begins on January 14 on the Enka campus. Practitioners who have been accepted to the program may REGISTER FOR THE COURSE.
Methods of Substance Abuse Treatment
Methods course that focuses on the knowledge and skills needed to work effectively in a variety of clinical settings specific to substance abuse PREQ SOCW 520] This course will be taught in fall semester (2009) on the Cullowhee campus.
